Information from Glenda Allen; email 13 Feb 2000, trogdon@iland.net: "I was told by a historian in Rockbridge that Christopher Vineyard's land adjoined Thomas Jefferson's Natural Bridge property. In fact I think it was in two counties as he lived in one and the land was also in the other. This is what I was told. Just thought I would let you know this little fact. Also, did you know that Lexington, Va is built on Gilbert Campbell's plantation. The now Maury River back in his time was the North River. Where the waterfalls are is where he had his ferry. His plantation home was on top of the hill where Washington and Lee University is now located. He was Presbyterian by faith. I found this in a book in the Lexington library. Where he is buried I don't know. Stonewall Jackson of course is buried in Lexington on our land. They are putting a marker at this ferry and Gilbert's name will be on it. The lady who works at the Historical Society is on the committee and assured me this would be done. We shall see! I'll check it out when I pass through on my way to DC the next time. |
