.
[ I found the following description of the James Swain Newberry Family cemetery on the Internet and now I can't seem to locate the URL for the source. I will use this description here since it does contain information that is no longer readable on the James Swain Newberry marker. Not knowing when this description was written, I will add that this marker was moved from the shoreline of Lake Weiss to a location about 300 feet from the shore. I was told that some fisherman had used some of the footstones as weights for a trotline, so some descendants moved this marker to a location where vandals were less likely to disturb the marker. There appears to be one minor error in the description of the engravings on the sides of the marker in the description below. I will insert what appears is necessary to correct that discrepancy and highlight that correction using red text. Side 3 of this marker is now, almost completely unreadable and so, I must assume the information in the description for side 3 is correct! (Steven Earl Newberry - 30 Jul 2002)] This cemetery is made up of one major stone and several small stones on a wooded hillside overlooking Weiss Lake on the old James Newberry, Sr. Farm. The main stone stands about 4 feet tall is four sided and has inscriptions on all four sides of James Newberry's 3 wives and 19 children. All of the listed family members are NOT buried at this cemetery but are listed on this stone. Side #1: Side #2 Children of James and Sarah Howell (Wife #1)
Side #3 Children of James and Nancy Freeman
Side #4 Children of James and Nancy Freeman
Side #4 Children of James and Sarah A. Gipson
The * before the name is that these brothers moved to AR and OK. The person who gave Karen the information wrote on the paper that they suspect they might have spent some time in MO. On the bottom of the paper it says: "The burial place of the following is unknown: Edman, Isaac, Abraham, Joseph, James, Henry, William, Abraham #2. |
